What to bring to Band Camp:
- Water - either a 1 gallon insulated bottle or jug, and /or a camel back style bladder to wear.
Hydration is crucial to your success.
- Don't count on us having water for you and make sure to take water out to the field or asphalt.
- Sunscreen - you will be in the sun and may get burned and that is never any fun.
- Hat - baseball style or any large brimmed hat to protect your face. Add a bandanna for the back of your neck.
- Sunglasses
- Food - no soda - don't even bring it!
- Snacks - fruit or veggies, no sugar. Have water with snacks.
- Lunch - no sugar, think good nutrition, protein (meat) veggies and fruit, peanut butter sandwiches work as well, don't be hungry, have water with lunch.
- Dinner - no sugar, think good nutrition, you will need calories to replace what you burn. Try to avoid junk food. Have water with dinner.
- There is a NO soda mandate in force for band camp. It's too much sugar for the heat and could make you sick, it has no nutritional value, empty calories, and it gunks up your wind instruments.
- Good nutrition will make a difference.
- Drink plenty of water of course, and consider fruit and vegetables, healthy cereal, peanut butter, pasta salad, turkey sandwich (protein), string cheese, salad with light dressing.
- Avoid cereal with sugar, no pizza, no fast food, try to avoid fried foods. Plan ahead for the 2 weeks and create a menu that you can put together and bring in a cooler with blue ice. Get a cooler large enough for the whole day's worth of food.
- Fill your water bottle with ice and water, you may need to bring extra water in your cooler. A frozen bottle of water in the cooler will help keep your food cold
- There is a NO soda mandate for the band room. It is not allowed. No exceptions.
- Instrument
- Music in a 3 ring binder using page protectors. Put your name on it.
- Pencils - keep a few in your instrument case and binder.
Clothing:
- Remember...NO jeans! Long pants are allowed but you will be asked to roll them up. Shorts are better.
- Shorts but not too short. Athletic basketball style or gym shorts are good. Shorts must reach to your knees. Clothing should be loose and comfortable.
- T-shirts or woven shirt, tucked in. Wear light colored clothing. Black absorbs heat.
- Running shoes. Period! No Vans, no slip ons, no sandals, no exceptions. You will be running to build endurance and marching on the asphalt.
- Good socks are important, wool blend or synthetic will keep your feet dry and comfortable. Cotton socks hold sweat and can cause blisters.
- Bring a hat and leave it in your locker. You will be reminded to wear it whenever outside. Do the same with sunglasses and sunblock.
Remember:
- Hydration begins the day before Band Camp starts and continues every day during camp and every night when you get home.
- There is nothing worse than not having enough water in your system except having a poor breakfast.
- You are expected to have a good, filling breakfast before you come to camp. Try to make it nutritious with healthy cereal and fruit. You will need the calories to get you through the morning. Eat a banana to boost your potassium intake. Drink water on the ride to camp.
- Do not come to band camp hungry.
- Have we mentioned water?
Be On Time:
- Come to camp every day and be on time. Be ready to work. That's how a Championship band behaves.
- On time means at least 15 minutes before 9AM to chat with friends, get your instruments out, and for you to get warmed up.
- To be late is ridiculous and could earn you extra laps so - don't be late.
Have a great Band Camp and you will have a successful marching season. Success begins with you. |
